4Projects selected for $1bn water supply project

Date:     04th December 2009

Title:      Project to address water shortage in Jordan to deploy collaboration tool from 4Projects

4Projects appointed as extranet provider for a project aimed at addressing the chronic water shortage in Jordan.

For a number of years water supply has been outstripped by demand in the Greater Amman Area of Jordan.  In order to alleviate this problem the Disi-Mudawarra to Amman water conveyance project aims to provide 100million cubic metres of water per year to the area through the construction of a 325km pipeline.

This pipeline will drive water from the Jordan-Saudi Arabia border to Amman and included in the scope of works is 55 production wells, 120 kilometres of collection piping, 325 kilometres of conveyance piping, two pumping stations, four tanks and one reservoir, control valves and operation and maintenance facilities.

The Jordan-based concession company DIWACO, or Disi Water Company, through EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) Contractor GAMA Power Systems recognised the need to have a market leading system in place to manage the many complex and varied issues a project of this nature would throw at the project team.  With a large number of staff working on the project in a number of different locations, including Turkey, Sweden, UK, Dubai, Lebanon and Jordan it was imperative that the solution was able to be accessed from anywhere in the world.  Just as important was the need to ensure that the right information is available for each individual every time they need it.

Having undertaken a comprehensive reveiw of the market in order to identify the most appropriate solution for these and other requirements GAMA selected 4Projects for the job.  Neil Jarvis    , Divisional Director of 4Projects commented on the contract “We are delighted to be associated with such an important project.  Our solution is designed to allow project teams to work together more effectively and, on this project, with so many of the project personnel in different countries the ability to collaborate via the internet will be invaluable.”

Note to Editors;

About the Project;

The Government of Jordan conceived the Disi Water Conveyance Project as part of its strategic plan to increase water supplies to the country’s growing population. Jordan is one of the world’s most water-scarce countries, and the Disi project is a key solution. It is expected to supply Amman and surrounding areas with more than 100 million cubic meters of water a year. The use of water from the reservoir in Disi-Mudawarra started in the early 1980s for municipal and industrial purposes in the city of Aqaba.

The Disi project is the largest privately financed water supply project in Jordan and the surrounding countries. GAMA Energy, based in Ankara, will invest approximately US$190 million, the Ministry of Water and Irrigation of Jordan will provide a US$300 million grant, and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation of the United States, the European Investment Bank and Proparco of France will collectively provide US$455 million in debt financing.
